Cemetery prostitute outreach

The cemetery community of East Java, Indonesia is filled with thousands of sarcophagi spanning more than seventeen acres. It also holds some of the most beautiful and precious women and children in the world. Some of them are victims of abuse, sexual exploitation, and trafficking. Some are disabled, orphaned, ill, or widowed. But all of their situations are informed by severe poverty. They are known by the surrounding community as the "living dead."

With little hope and limited options women here turn to what they see as their only choice, selling themselves for sex. During the day they follow families through the cemetery begging for money, but as the daylight fades, they line the rows of sarcophagi offering themselves for as little as 7,000 Indonesian rupiah—approximately $0.75 USD.

We know that there is hope and we believe that Jesus walks the grounds of this cemetery. He has invited us further into this beautiful place.

The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.
— Isaiah 9:2

We began this outreach with an annual Christmas party for the cemetery women and their children in January 2013. By 2015 we have opened a small office to coordinate partnered micro-finance solutions for the women and an education sponsorship for the children as well as a community care center inside the cemetery that provides a myriad of services.

With humility, the genuine offer of friendship, and consistent visitation, we are beginning to introduce new opportunities and solutions to the beautiful families of Yellow Flower.
